Summary/Rezime

In the process of European Union (EU) integration, Serbia as a membership candidate is harmonizing its system with EU standards. It also applies to the field of nuclear medicine, which is defined as application  of  radionuclides in diagnosis and therapy and plays an important role in managing various  diseases and disorders. New radiopharmaceuticals and equipment develop rapidly, increasing the risk for inappropriate use due to lack of relevant legislation and education. Even though nuclear medicine has existed in our country for 60 years, it is necessary to adjust the existing procedures to EU standards implemented through European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) guidelines. Established in 1985, the EANM has since become the main nuclear medicine organization in Europe, which represents all European Nuclear Medicine activities in the field of science, education and the promotion of good and safe practice by providing information, reasoned comment and argument vis-à-vis European Authorities and European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). Harmonization of education in EU through EANM was realized through European Board of Nuclear Medicine (EBNM), which every nuclear medicine specialist in Europe can obtain after passing EANM specialized training courses and final exam. EANM promotes professional training in Nuclear Medicine and acts as an advisory body of experts and leads European activities concerning regulatory affairs relevant for nuclear medicine (education, training, dosimetry, instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals, procedures, quality control and assurance), resulting in improvement of public health. Two EANM courses have been held in Belgrade and organized by our staff. Likewise, our department has already been accredited ad EANM Training Center (2016/2020), which is an important incentive for further efforts to align with EU standards in the region.
